Workshop Descriptions:
Basic Darbuka/Doumbek – This class covers proper Arabic and Turkish technique, with a focus on proper hand placement, posture, clean execution for optimal sound, and subdivision of tempo.
The Basics of Playing with Dancers - This class includes ideas like the rule of fours, how to cue off of and how to cue the dancers, and other methods, tips, and ways to make your drumming mesh easily with the dancers you want to play for.
Working with Sixes, Sevens, and Nines – Many drummers have problems with time signatures that are not the basic 4/4 rhythm. We will learn a sure-fire method for counting rhythms in odd meters, as well as an overview of the most common rhythms that are played in these “odd” time signatures.
Ensemble Drumming and Percussion Let’s work together with doumbeks, frame drums, riqs, zills, and other percussion in a really fun class that will demonstrates the joy of making music together with space and time for all to be heard, often in polyrhythmic set-ups.
Advanced Techniques Got good rhythm and understand the basics of your instrument? In this class, Dave will cover slaps, pops, riz, many finger rolls, and other tricks and techniques to dress up your playing.
Basic Drum Solo Dave will teach how to structure a classical drum solo for maximum effect and usefulness for you, your audience, and a dancer.
Split Finger Technique This class will feature the famous, and new Turkish Split Finger technique. This technique derives from the Romani peoples in Turkey, who looked to synthesize the best of what was available in hand drumming techniques for use on the native Darbukas of Turkey. This led to the use of Indian Tabla and Ghatam hand positions and strikes, while playing the Middle Eastern goblet drum. The effects of this marriage is amazing in its possibilities and has led to new frontiers in goblet drumming. Dave will show us the basics of the technique and give us some drills, tips, and set up some hand patterns for us to play some familiar rhythms using this dynamic new way of playing.
Custom Dave will gladly design a workshop on any topic within his realm of knowledge and teaching ability.
